Calling Beyond
Celestial Channelling is magic focused not on power, but on calling for help.
Celestial Channelling is a ritual-based magical practice that taps into the vast and unknowable currents of space, allowing individuals to summon temporary aid from entities across realms and sub-realms. These beings, responding to the user’s intent and offering, arrive with a singular purpose before departing back to their origin.
At its heart, Celestial Channelling revolves around four core phases: The Ritual, The Summoning, Pact Formation, and Completion.
-
The Ritual is the initial act of reaching out into the fabric of space. To begin the process, the user must perform a ritual that aligns their presence with the currents of the cosmos. This alignment is not passive; it requires a deliberate offering, a personal or meaningful sacrifice meant to attract the attention of a being. Offerings vary widely, mana, memories, emotions, rare items, even parts of the user’s body or life force. The more valuable or emotionally resonant the offering, the stronger and more willing the summoned entity is likely to be.
-
The Summoning occurs when a distant entity senses the ripple caused by the ritual and chooses to answer. These entities are random in nature unless previously bonded, and their form, power, and temperament are all shaped by the offering and the user’s underlying desire. Some may be benevolent, others monstrous. There is no guarantee of loyalty or cooperation beyond the task at hand.
-
Pact Formation is a rare occurrence during a summoning. Occasionally, an entity may be moved enough by the user’s spirit or offering to form a lasting bond. This pact allows the user to call upon that specific entity again and again, without the need for future rituals. However, the moment a pact is formed, the user loses the ability to summon other entities. From that point onward, their rituals will only ever reach the bound entity, regardless of circumstance or need. If the entity perishes, it cannot be replaced.
-
Completion is the end of the cycle. Once the entity completes the purpose for which it was called, be it battle, healing, transport, or counsel, it disappears, vanishing from the world as suddenly as it came. Only bound entities return.
There is no formalized ranking system for the entities summoned through Celestial Channelling. Instead, their might and intelligence are a direct reflection of the ritual’s execution and the offering’s significance. A hollow or half-hearted call may draw nothing but echoes, or worse, something petty and vengeful. A bold and powerful offering, however, can summon beings of staggering power or ancient origin.
Understanding what these beings value is part of the practice. Some seek material wealth, others pain, artistry, riddles, or even subtle memories.
